abstract omicron-Benzylphenols of formula (I) are new: (where X1 is halogen; Y1 is halogen, 1-4 C alkyl or 1-4 C alkoxy; Z1 is H or halogen; U1 and V1 are H, halogen or 1-4 C alkyl; W1 is H, 1-4 alkyl, 1-4 C alkoxy or CF3). Cpds. (I) are microbicides active against Gram positive and negative bacteria and fungi; they can be used as preservatives (e.g., for plastics, textiles, sizes, and paints), disinfectants, slime-control agents, and deodorant additives for clothing fabrics. They can also be used in veterinary medicine, esp. for treating skin, intestinal and urogenital infections, as growth promoters, and as anthelmintics; and in agriculture as fungicides and bactericides.
