abstract Anti-inflammatory phthalazino 2,3-b phthalazine-5(14H), 12(7H)-dione is prepd. by (a) reducing 2-benzyl-1(2H)-phthalazinone to 2-benzyl-3,4-dihydro-1(2H)-phthalazinone (pref. with Zn and acid at 50-80 degrees C); (b) reacting this with XCOY (where X and Y are halogen, lower alkoxy, vinyloxy, p-nitrophenoxy, benzyloxy, benzhydryloxy, N3,imidazolyl or s-triazolyl, or together form ethylenedioxy); and (c) cyclising the prodt. with a Lewis acid, e.g., ZnCl2, SbCl5, SbF5, AlCl3, BF3, HF, H2SO4 or H3PO4, at 0-130 degrees C. The cpd. XCOY is pref. phosgene, ethyl chloroformate or diethyl carbonate.
