titleOfInvention 7,7-Dimethyl 6-methylene tricycloundecan-2-one - from vetivenic acid by redn., acylation, pyrolysis then oxidn.
abstract 6.2.1.01,5 undecan-2-one- of formula (I) is prepd. from a cpd. of formula (II) (in which one X is H and the other is COOH) by redn. to a cpd. (II) in which one X is CH2OH, then acylation of the -CH2OH gp., pyrolysis of the ester to cpd. (II) in which both X's represent =CH2, and finally oxidn. of this cpd. to give (I). Used in perfumes, the cpd. has an original woody smell. Although present in the essential vetiver oil, isolation of the cpd. from this is two costly. The isolated cpd. has both a reproducible smell compared with the variable oil and also can be used more extensively than the oil.
