abstract Ethers of formula (I) (where R1 is 1-5C alkyl 3-5C alkenyl or 3C alkynyl and Y is O or CH2), e.g. 1-ethoxy-3-methyl-4-(p-phenoxy-phenoxy)-2-cis/trans-butene, may be prepd. by (a) reacting a cpd. of the formula p-C6H5-Y-C6H4-OM (II), (where M is a metal) with a halide of the formula Hal-CH2-C(CH3)=CH-CH2-O-R1 (III), (where Hal is halogen), (b) reacting a cpd. of the formula p-C6H5-Y-C6H4-O-CH2-C(CH3)=CH-CH2-OH (IV) with a halide of the formula Hal-R1, or (c) (to give (I; R1=CH3) reacting a cpd. of formula (IV) with dimethyl sulphate in the presence of a strong base and a catalyst. (I) are insecticides showing activity in e.g. tests for contact activity against Dysdercus fasciatus larvae Aedes aegypti larvae, Tenebrio molitor pupae and Ephestia kuehniella larvae.
