abstract | Compounds (I) Where R = H or alkyl R' = alkyl group Y = H or a group which is ortho-para directing in electrophilic substitution (specifically OH, alkoxy, acyloxy or CH3SO2-O-) X is carbonyl, ketalised carbonyl (including thioketalised or hemithioketalised carbonyl), ethylidene, hydroxymethylene, acyloxymethylene, alkane sulphonyloxymethylene, an organohydroxymethylene group or -CR2R3 with R2 as an unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group or a substituted alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl group having the essential character of an unsubstituted alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl and R3 is OH or acyloxy and the 9-hydrogen atom (when present) has the alpha-configuration. The processes provide a novel unique and feasible synthetic route to the natural sex hormone equilin (I, where R'=CH3), and other steroids. |
