abstract | Instrument bearing blocks, consisting of ceramics having hardness >2000 kg/mm Vickers, are produced by the pyrolytic decomposition from the vapour phase on a reaction temp. heated metal wire of few mu dia so that the blank is formed on the wire. W or Pt-Rh wires suspended in a cylindrical reaction vessel are pref. used. Oxides, carbides, nitrides, borides of Al, Si, Ti, B are pref. deposited. The process yields blocks with ready made bores which are exposed by chemical dissolution of the wire thus eliminating the laborious and costing bore drilling operation. |
