abstract New cpds. of formula (I): (where R1 is H or lower alkyl, and R2 is OH, alkoxy, cycloalkoxy, cycloalkylalkoxy or amino opt. mono- or di-substd. by lower alkyl, or R1 and R2 together form a single bond; R3 is H, Cl, lower alkyl or (when R1=H or R1+R2 is a single bond) also OH, or (when R1 = lower alkyl) also lower alkoxy; R4 is H, Cl, Br lower alkyl, or (when R1=H or R1+R2 is a single bond) also OH, or (when R1=lower alkyl) also lower alkoxy, or (when R3=H) also F or CF3; R5 is H or lower alkyl; R6 is H or Me), and their salts and/or optical isomers, are prepd. by (a) solvolysis of the corresp. nitrile; (b) hydrolysis of the esters to free acids; (c) esterification of the free acids; (d) reaction of (I; R5 = H) with an alkyl halide or sulphone to give (I; R5 = alkyl); (e) reaction of the free acids with NH3 or an amine to give (I; R2=NH2 or mono- or dialkylamino); (f) hydrolysis of (I; R1=alkyl) to (I; R1=OH); or (g) cyclisation of (I; R1=H, R2=OH) to the lactone.
