abstract | Dihydrooxoarylidene imidazoles, useful as dyes, pigments and in some cases, pH indicators, have formula (where R is H, the Z residue opt. X1-oxo-(X2H)-dihydroarylidene gp. and X1 and X2 are nos. which denote a posn in dihydroarylidene gp such that the double bond of the oxo atom together with the bonds shown by dotted lines forms a conjugated system, and Z is a residue which has a -1 to +1 Hammett delta-value) and are prepd. by oxidn. of a corresp. (hydroxyaryl)-imidazole, which may be prepd. by reacting a 1,2-dicarbonyl cpd. or a hydroxybenzoin with a monoaldehyde and an NH3 source. |
