abstract Basic azo dyes, (I) free from acid water-solubilising groups, where D is the residue of a diazo component, A is an acylamino group but not an alkanoylamino group, Y is a possibly branched aliphatic carbon chain preferably with 4 carbon atoms, R1, R' and R2 are hydrogen, (cyclo)alkyl or aralkyl, R is (cyclo)alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, R3 is (cyclo)alkyl or aralkyl, X is an anion n = 1 or 2, and N, R1, R' and Y or N, R1 and R2 and/or R3 may be members of a heterocyclic ring, are prepared by (a) reacting a component (II) where Z is a reactive atom or group, with an amine NR1R2R3 or reacting a compound (III) where Z' is a reactive atom or group, with a compound (IV) or by (b) coupling a diazotised amine with a coupling component (V). or by (c) reacting a dye (VI) with compounds R3X.
