abstract 21-Fluoro-steroids of the partial formula (I): (where R is H and R1 and R2 are H or hydrocarbyl or R1, R2 is a double bond) are prepd. in good yields by reacting steroids of partial formula (II) (where Z is H or an esterified carboxyl gp) with a diazo gp. transferring agent (e.g. a sulphonyl azide, an azidinium salt or a ditridiazoacetic acid ester, reacting the resulting diazo-steroid of partial formula (III) with HF and if desired, at any stage converting functionally modified OH gps. into free OH gps. or functionally modifying free OH gps. 21-Fluoro-3-(hydroxy or acyloxy)-pregna-5,16-dienes which are claimed per se, have antiviral activity. Other products are useful as intermediates for pharmacologically active fluorinated steroids.
