abstract Dyestuffs, optical brightening agents and textile assistants have formula: A.X.(Y)n - (I), where A is the colour component radical of the dyestuff or corresponding component of the other materials. In the case of the reactive dyestuff A is a group UV where U and V are passive and active azo components. X is a group with many reactive centres; Y is a group with reactive centres or Zr where Z is a heteroatom and R an aliphatic or aromatic group. (I) is prepared by reacting the crude component A.H. or V.H. with Yo.X.(Y)n, spray drying the product containing any necessary additives and separating the dry product via a cyclone. Yo contains reactive centres and may be diazotised and coupled. The method avoids salting out, difficult filtration steps, disposal of effluents and milling stages and lends itself to complete enclosure of plant and continuous operation. An example describes preparation of an optical brightening agent, 4, 4'-bis-(2-(methoxy-6-phenylamino)-1, 3, 5-triazinylamino)-stilbene-2,2'-disulphonic acid by reaction of cyanuric chloride, 4,4-diamino stilbene-2,2' disulphonic acid and aniline in methanol.
