titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of 2-phthalimidoacetamido-5-nitrobenzophenone
abstract 2-Phthalimidoacetamido-5-nitrobenzophenone (I) Intermediate for the preparation of 7-nitro-5-phenyl-1,4-3H-benzo-diazepine 2 (1H)-one, a powerful sedative with low toxicity. A solution of 4.4 g. phthalimidoacetyl chloride and 4.8 g. 2-amino-5-nitrobenzophenone in 30 ml. methylene chloride is boiled for 1 night under reflux. The crystalline precipitate is filtered off and the filtrate concentrated. The second fraction is combined with the first to give 8.3 g. 2-phthalimidoacetamido-5-nitrobenzophenone, purified by crystallising from methanol, m.p. 205-207 deg.C.
