titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of 3-phenyl-or phenyl-substituted-7-amino-coumarins
abstract The known compounds, useful as brightening agent intermediates, are prepared by hydrolysing an acrylic acid derivative (where X is COOH, COOR or CN, Ar is opt. subst. phenyl and R is lower alkyl). The OR group is converted to OH and the resulting compound is treated with an acid to cause ring-closure. The starting materials are cheaper than those used in previous methods.
