abstract | Beta-nitrophenyl-alpha-chloropropionic acids prepn. Title cpds. of formula (I):- (where X is H, F, Cl or Br and R is H or a nitrophenyl residue), which are plant -protection agents and intermediates for pharmaceuticals, are prepd. by reacting corr. m- or p-nitrobenzyl alcohols or m,m'- or p,p'-dinitrobenzhydrols or esters thereof (ester residue pref. derived from sulphuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, acetic or propionic acid) at 80-100 degrees C in 90-95% H2SO4 with 1.5-5 mol of trichloroethylene. |
