abstract |
Alkylated aromatic hydrocarbons are prepd. by a process which comprises (1) subjecting hydrocarbon stock containing 10-15C straight chain paraffins to dehydrogenation at 400-600 degrees C in the presence of 0.5-15 mole H2 per one mole hydrocarbon and in the presence of a non-acidic catalyst consisting of (a) dehydrogenation promoter selected from Pt, Pd and their cpds. supported on (b) alumina mixed with alkali metal or its oxide, (2) separating the hydrogen-rich gas and hydrocarbon fraction containing all the normally liquid components of the effluent, (3) recycling at least a portion of the H2-rich gas to (1), (4) contacting, at -20 degrees to + 70 degrees C, the hydrocarbon fraction with an alkylatable aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of a catalyst comprising acid-acting inorg. cpd. having alkylating activity (pref. HF) and (5) recovering the mono-alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon having 10-15C atoms in linear configuration from the alkylation zone. Biodegradable detergents are produced by introducing a hydrophilic group into the aryl nucleus of the mono-alkylated aromatic hydrocarbon. |
