titleOfInvention Disinfectant containing iodine
abstract Germicidal and sanitizing iodine-containing compositions. The compositions of the invention consist essentially of 0.5-55 wt.% (pref. 0.5-10 wt.%) iodine, 1-35 wt.% (pref. 1-10 wt.%) KI, 1-50 wt.% (pref. 20-40 wt.%) of an acid, with the balance of the formula being water. Mineral, organic or mixtures of these acids may be used e.g. HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4, HNO3, sulfamic, hydroxyacetic, citric, malic, etc. The amount of acid used should be sufficient to bring the pH of the diluted iodine composition in the range 2-4. The compositions are prepared by first dissolving the KI in about 1/3 of the total volume of water to be used. This solution is mixed for about 5 minutes then the iodine is slowly added over 10-15 mins. The resultant solution is mixed for 3/4 hr. and then the balance of water and the acid are added. Alternatively the iodine and KI are ground together in a ball mill then the mixture dissolved in water or a water-acid solution. The diluted solution should contain at least 10 p.p.m.(pref. at least 12.5 p.p.m.) iodine for sanitization and at least 20 p.p.m. (pref. at least 25 p.p.m.) for disinfection. Results of tests carried out to show the efficacy and storage stability of compositions of the invention are given.
