titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of 4- (1-hydroxy-4-oxo-2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexen-1-yl) -3-buten-2-one
abstract The compound 4-(1-hydroxy-4-oxo-2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-1-yl)-3-butene-2- -one, and its preparation by oxidizing alpha-ionone and separating the required product from the oxidation products. The above compound is used to prepare the plant abscission hormone, Abscisin II, which is 3-methyl-5-1-hydroxy-4-oxo-2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexene-1-yl)-ci- s, trans-2,4-pentadienoic acid, the process involving reaction with triethyl phosphonoacetate and sodium hydride in a solvent (1,2-dimethoxyethane) to give the ethyl ester of the required compound and then hydrolysis of this with sodium hydroxide in aqueous alcohol.
