abstract | (A) Process: R = methoxy or dimethylamino (B) Starting materials (II) The dehydrogenation is most suitably carried out using a catalyst such as palladium on carbon, sulphur, selenium, chloranil or dichloro-dicyanobenzoquinone. Palladium on carbon is preferred. The conversion takes place in a liquid medium which is a solvent for the starting material such as mesitylene, cyclohexane and dihydronaphthalene. Preferred temps. are usually the reflux temp. of the solvent. Filtration and the usual purification gives (I). |
