abstract | Varnish enamels contain 10 to 90%, especially 50-80%, alkyd resins and 90 to 10%, especially 50-20%, etherified aminotriazine resins. The varnishes do not contain free formaldehyde which gives many present enamels an objectionable smell. Hard flexible films can be obtained by heating for 30 mins. at 90 deg.C. The alkyd is a ricinene alkyd low in oil. The triazine resin is prepared by reacting 6 to 10 moles, especially 8-9 moles, butanol, 1 mol aminotriazine of formula where R is NH2, substituted NH2, alkyl, aryl, acyl or OH, and less than 5 moles, preferably 3.9 to 4.5 moles, formaldehyde, in the presence of 0.5 to 5 cc., preferably 0.8 to 2.5 cc. glacial acetic acid. In particular R is Me, Et, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, amyl, phenyl or acetyl. |
