abstract | Kiketoester intermediates for fungistatic antibiotic pyrrolnitrin. Cpds. (I): (in which Y is H or Cl, and R is a lower alkyl) are produced by reacting (chloro)-o-nitrotoluene with an oxalic diester int he presence of a strong base to obtain metal enolate of the corresponding ester of the formula: which is then reacted with a 2,3-dihalogenopropene to obtain a mixture of isomers of compounds (in which X is a halogen). The mxiture is heated to convert the isomers to the compound (IV), which is hydrolysed to (I) in the presence of conc. H2SO4, at below degree C. |
