| abstract |
A process for the treatment of a bitumen feedstock that comprises a liquid phase that includes a heavy fraction, a light fraction and a lighter fraction is provided. The process includes subjecting the bitumen feedstock to a thermal treatment at about or below incipient coking conditions and without an addition of a hydrogen- containing gas. The thermal treatment comprises heating the bitumen feedstock at a temperature from about 200°C to about 475°C and at a pressure of between about 50 psi and about 1500 psi. Subjecting the bitumen feedstock to a thermal treatment can facilitate viscosity and/or density reduction of the bitumen feedstock and can facilitate avoiding the need for the addition of an external source of hydrogen. |
