The purpose of the present invention is to provide surface-modified spherical active carbon exhibiting excellent adsorption capacity with respect to uremic substances in the body, and particularly with respect to ß-aminoisobutyric acid. Accordingly, provided is an orally administered adsorbent characterized by including surface-modified spherical active carbon which includes at least 0.5 wt% of nitrogen, and which has a specific surface area obtained using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method of 800-3000 m2/g, an average particle size of 0.01-1 mm, and a total acid group content of at least 0.30 meq/g. |
