abstract Systems and methods for altering neurite growth are generally described. In some embodiments, a system may include a neuron comprising a neurite and electrodes able to generate a physical guidance cue. The physical guidance cue may be used to alter the growth of the neurite and may be temporally and spatially dynamic, such that neurite growth may be altered in a spatial and/or temporal manner. Dynamic control of neurite growth may be used to form directional neural connections, intersections, and/or overlaps. The system combrises a chamber capable of housing a living cell and promoting cell growth; a channel, wherein the channel is connected to the chamber, wherein the channel has a height and/or width of less than or equal to about 20 microns; and at least one electrode pair intersecting the channel with a center to center spacing of the electrodes of less than or equal to about 200 microns, and wherein the plurality of electrode pairs intersects the channel.
