abstract The invention firstly relates to an organic resin which comprises, in its overall composition, structural units derived from: a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer bearing a cyclic carbonate group, b) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer bearing a at least one carboxylic acid group, c) at least one hydrophobic hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated monomer having a hydrophobicity value estimated by the logarithm of the partition coefficient between octanol and water, of at least 3, d) optionally, at least another ethylenically unsaturated monomer different from said monomers a), b) or c) and bearing no group capable of reacting with a carbonate group or carboxylic acid but also no group capable of reacting with a functional group of another monomer component of said resin any crosslinking reaction in the preparation of said resin being excluded, said resin having generally: acid number of at least 10 mg KOH / g relative to the dry resin and a cyclic carbonate content of 0.5 to 3.5 mmol / g relative to the dry resin. The invention also relates to an aqueous dispersion of said resin and a method of preparation, such as a crosslinkable aqueous composition comprising said resin or dispersion and a polyamine. The resin is used for the preparation of crosslinked polyurethanes without the use of polyisocyanate, particularly in high performance aqueous coatings.
