abstract A method of treating tailings using magnetic particles comprising the steps of: obtaining tailings from a mining operation, the tailings comprising at least water, suspended clay particles, and hydrocarbons; removing at least a portion of the hydrocarbons from the tailings; adjusting the tailings to a pH range that results in a surface charge difference between the suspended clay particles and magnetic particles; mixing the magnetic particles into the tailings and permitting the magnetic particles and clay particles to agglomerate; and removing the agglomerated clay and magnetic particles from the tailings.
