abstract A process for producing an interferon alpha 5 (IFNa5) protein by expression in an IFNa5 producing Escherichia coli host cell, wherein incorporation of an extra methionine residue in the N-terminal end of the polypeptide chain is minimized as well as the generation of its oxidised species is disclosed. The IFNa5 protein can be purified by an efficient process to render a biologically active IFNa5.
