abstract A portable Ultraviolet-C (UVC) based water purification system employs a novel baffle array for increasing the ef-ficiency per unit energy of irradiating UVC light for water pathogen eradication. Closed loop feedback monitoring of UVC light power ensures high levels of pathogen eradication. This system is capable of eradicating a wide range of waterborne bacteria, viruses, protozoa, helminthes, yeast, and mold found in natural freshwater sources worldwide. System pre- or post- filters can re-move harmful organic compounds pesticides, inorganic compounds and heavy metals. The system can eradicate pathogens in flu-ids besides water. A low cost communications system for reaching geographically dispersed populations can be combined with and powered by the purification system. In one embodiment, a packet radio system is provided to create nodes in a wireless mesh communications system to provide voice, data video and internet communications using an array of the water purifiers to create a wireless mesh network.
