titleOfInvention | Methods and combinations of probes to chromosomal regions for detecting melanoma |
abstract | Conventional methods of diagnosis rely on pathological criteria that result in misdiagnosis an unacceptably high percentage of the time. The present invention is based on the discovery of methods and combinations of probes to chromosomal regions that are gained or lost in melanoma that provide highly specific and sensitive assays for the detection of melanoma cells. In particular, the invention provides a method of detecting the presence of melanoma cells by contacting a sample (e.g., a biopsy) with a combination of at least two probes, one of which targets chromosome subregion 6p25, and detecting the hybridization pattern of the combination of probes, wherein a hybridization pattern showing at least one gain or loss at a chromosome subregion targeted by the probes is indicative of melanoma. Also provided are corresponding combinations of probes and kits comprising them. |
