abstract A method for producing a defined yeast food composition for supplementing a complex fermentation feedstock used for ethanol production. The method comprises selecting a complex fermentation feedstock and conducting a first series of steps wherein aliquots of the feedstock are supplemented with selected concentrations of selected individual nutritive elements. The supplemented aliquots are fermented and assessed for responses to the different nutritive elements whereby a preferred concentration for each element is chosen. A second series of steps is conducted to assess the effects of feedstock supplementation with selected combinations of selected individual nutritive elements on fermentation efficiency and production, wherefrom a preferred combination of elements is selected. The defined yeast food composition is the combination of elements selected with the method and preferably comprises a mixture of ionic salts plus urea. A method for ethanol production in a complex fermentation feedstock supplemented with the defined urea plus salts-based yeast food.
