abstract | A fuel cell having a cathode and an anode and, sandwiched between them, a proton-conductive ion-exchange electrolytic membrane wherein oxygen is supplied to the cathode and a hydrogen gas containing carbon monoxide is supplied to the anode, characterized in that the cathode comprises an electroconductive porous substrate and, carried thereon, platinum or a platinum alloy and a proton-conductive ion-exchange electrolytic polymer, the anode comprises an electroconductive porous substrate and, carried thereon, platinum or a platinum alloy and a proton-conductive ion-exchange electrolytic polymer, and at least the anode further has a proton-donating substance carried thereon. The above fuel cell allows the suppression of the poisoning of a catalytic electrode, even when use is made of a reformed hydrogen gas containing carbon monoxide as a fuel supplied to the anode thereof, although it has an anode carrying platinum or a platinum alloy as a catalytic electrode, which leads to the achievement of an improved output. |
