The invention relates to electric separators and to a method for producing the same. An electric separator is a separator that is used in batteries and other systems in which electrodes have to be separated from one other while, e.g., maintaining their ionic conductivity. The separator is preferably a thin, porous, insulating material that has a high ionic permeability, good mechanical strength and long-term resistance to the chemicals and solvents used in the system, e.g., in the electrolyte of the battery. The aim of the invention is to provide a separator that completely insulates the cathode from the anode in batteries, that is permanently elastic and that follows the movements in the system, e.g., in the electrode stack during charge and discharge. This aim is achieved by providing the inventive electric separator which comprises a planar, flexible substrate that has a plurality of openings and that further comprises a coating on and in said substrate. The substrate is a polymer nonwoven and the coating is a porous, electrically insulating, ceramic coating. The separator is characterized by having a thickness of less than 80 ~m. |
