abstract 2-Furancarboxylic acid hydrazides represented by the general formula (I); prodrugs or physiologically acceptable salts thereof; hydrates or solvates thereof; processes for their preparation; and pharmaceutical compositions containing the same: (I) [wherein A is a group represented by the general formula (a) or the like: (a) (wherein one of R4 and R5 is cyano, nitro, or t he like, and the other is hydrogen or the like); one of R1 and R2 is -D-(X)m-R6 or the like, and the other is -E-(Y)n-R7, hydrogen, aryl, or the like; R3 is hydrogen or the like; D and E are each aryl; X and Y are each O or the like; R6 and R7 are each alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, or the like; and m and n are each 0 or 1, with the proviso that each aryl may be substituted. The compounds exhibit potent glucagon receptor antagonism and are useful as preventive and/or therapeutic drugs for symptoms and diseases in which glucagon participates.
