abstract | A process for production of aromatic oligomers by reacting a polycyclic aromatic compound with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst, by which an organic layer containing the oligomer and an aqueous layer containi ng the catalyst - which are difficultly separable by means of the prior art - c an be efficiently separated from each other by a simple method and a high-purit y aromatic oligomer can be recovered from the resulting organic layer lowered in the content of impurities. Specifically, a process for production of aromati c oligomers through phase separation of an aromatic oligomer reaction fluid obtained by condensing a polycyclic aromatic compound with formaldehyde in t he presence of an acid catalyst into an aqueous layer containing the catalyst a nd an organic layer containing the oligomer, which comprises adding an effectiv e amount of a surfactant selected from among nonionic ones and cationic ones a nd an alkali in such an amount as to neutralize 1 to 70 % of the acid catalyst to the aromatic oligomer reaction fluid prior to the phase separation to demulsify the emulsion phase, subjecting the resulting fluid to phase separation, and recovering the oligomer from the separated organic layer.</S DOAB> |
