titleOfInvention Method and substance for obtaining surfaces with antimicrobial properties
abstract The present invention relates to the use of photosensitizers to provide antibacterial surfaces on consumer and industrial items. The method comprises selecting a photosensitizer capable of being activted by an environmental condition and applying a photosensitizer formulation to a surface that is required to exhibit antimicrobial activity. The formulation is exposed to an environmental condition such as ambient light or an illumination source so as to activate the photosensitizer and produce singlet oxygen to destroy targeted microbes on the surface. In the preferred embodiment, a surface (102) is coated with the photosensitizer formulation (104) and the surface is further covered with a protective layer (108) that protects the photosensitizer from activation illumination and oxygen. In another preferred embodiment, there is a product having multiple layers, wherein each of the layers is a sheet having an upper surface coated with a photosensitizer. Each of the sheet layers protects an upper surface on the lower sheet from activation illumination and oxygen.
