titleOfInvention Modified asphalt cement and process for preparing same
abstract A method is described for the preparation of improved "multigrade" asphalt cement by a combination of gelled and polymer modified asphalt technologies. An optimum mixture of fatty acids, elastomeric polymers and neutralization aids described provide superior performance at greatly reduced cost. This is accomplished by saponifying a dispersion of at least one fatty acid with excess alkali metal base such that the total quantity of alkali does not exceed three times the stoichiometric quantity required for neutralization, and such that the excess alkali is composed of an alkali silicate. Further improvement in properties may also be obtained if one or more synthetic elastomeric polymers are included in the composition. The resulting chemically modified asphalt may be utilized in conventional processes in road, roofing and specialty applications. The asphalt cement may be prepared and applied using conventional hot-mix asphalt processes and manufacturing equipment.
