abstract | This invention relates to new conjugated linolenic acids, process for preparation thereof and method of use. Thus the invention is concerned with the preparation and purification of fatty acids which are homologues of conjugated linoleic acids, from materials rich in alpha or gamma linolenic acids. The reaction produces approximately over one third of 9Z,11E,15Z-octadecatrienoic acid from .alpha.-linolenic acid (9Z,12Z,15Z-octadecatrienoic acid). Enrichment up to and over 40% is readily performed with urea crystallization. Moreover, the product can be produced in over 90% purity by simple preparative liquid chromatography. The reaction is unique in that the reaction produces the abovementioned conjugated trienoic acid with a high selectivity, in a short time period and in relatively mild conditions. |
