abstract The instrument (300) includes an ion source region (32) coupled to an IMS (34) having is coupled to a quadrupole mass filter (302). The filter is coupled to a collision cell (304) which is coupled to an ion acceleration region of a mass spectrometer (36) such as a TOFMS. The instrument (300) is sequencing analysis wherein a three-dimensional ion spectrum (ion intensity vs. ion mobility and ion mass) is observed. If the spectrum reveals that no ions overlap in mobility values, the instrument (300) is reactivated whereby a complete three-dimensional spectrum of parent and daughter ions results. If, however, the original spectrum reveals that two or more ions overlap the QMF (302) is controlled to selectively filter out all but one of the overlapping ions.
