System and method for welding a seam between thermoplastic liner sheets |
abstract |
A means for joining thermoplastic sheets to each other at a seam defined by adjacent edges of the thermoplastic sheets by a bond that is accomplished within a short time, measured in minutes, and at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Surface portions extending from adjacent edges the thermoplastic sheets are impregnated with a resin having hydroxyl groups available for chemical covalent bonding. A polyurethane having an excess isocyanate component is then disposed between impregnated surface portions of the thermoplastic sheets such that covalent bonds are formed between the hydroxyl groups and isocyanate. The invention also contemplates sealing seams between adjacent thermoplastic sheets by impregnating a thermoplastic strip with a resin having hyrdroxyl groups and disposing the polyurethane having an excess isocyanate component between the strip and thermoplastic sheets such that covalent bonds are formed between the hydroxyl groups and isocyanate. |
