Pantoprazole has the following chemical structure: (See formula I) The novel compound (also referred to as pantoprazole magnesium dihydrate) is useful for the treatment and prevention of diseases which are considered to be treatable or avoidable by the use of pyridin-2-ylmethylsulfinyl-1H-benzimidazoles. In particular, the novel compound can be employed in the treatment of disorders of the stomach or the intestine.
