abstract Dodecyl 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)-propionate (DDAIP), having the following chemical structure: (see above formula) is prepared by transesterification of ethyl 2-(N,N- dimethylamino)-propionate. Crystalline acid addition salts of DDAIP are prepared by cooled mixing DDAIP with one of a select group of acids in the presence of a water-immiscible solvent such as hexane. The resulting DDAIP salts are crystalline, and exhibit a pattern of defined detection peaks upon analysis by powder x-ray diffraction. DDAIP is useful as a skin penetration enhancer.
