titleOfInvention Composite armor panel
abstract The invention provides a composite armor plate (4) for absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy from high velocity, armor-piercing projectiles, as well as from soft-nosed projectiles, the plate comprising a single internal layer of high density ceramic pellets (6) characterized in that the pellets are arranged in a single layer of adjacent rows and columns, wherein a majority of each of the pellets (6') is in direct contact with at least four adjacent pellets (6") and each of the pellets are substantially cylindrical in shape with at least one convexly-curved end face, further characterized in that spaces formed between the adjacent cylindrical pellets are filled with a material (10) for preventing the flow of soft metal from impacting projectiles through the spaces, the pellets (6) and material (10) being bound and retained in plate form by a solidified material (8), wherein the solidified material (8) and the plate material are elastic.
