abstract 9-phosphabicyclononanes are prepared by adding phosphine to a 1,5-cyclooctadiene in the presence of a free radical initiator in a polar solvent. Use of a polar solvent favours the formation of [3.3.1]- and [4.2.1]-9-phosphabicyclononanes over other secondary or tertiary phosphine products.
