abstract The invention relates to a device for connecting a rod to a bone anchori ng element. The device includes a connecting member having upper and lower ends, a bore hole with a central axis, and a through hole positioned perpendicular to the central axis. The device has a tensioning member insertable in the upper end of the connecting member for securing the anchoring element to the connector at a surgeon selected angle. A radially compressibl e spring chuck is arranged within the connecting member and has a cavity for receiving the head of the anchoring element. An insert slides into the bore hole of the connecting member and has a recess with a shape complementary to the outer surface of the chuck. The chuck is axially supported in the bore hole in such a fashion that radial movement of the chuck is not affected.
