abstract |
There is provided a spermicidal agent which is capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as superoxide (O2-) and hydrogen peroxide, in the presence of spermatozoa. Preferably, the agent is a 1,4-naphthoquinone represented by formula (I). Each group A can be H or any electron releasing moiety which enhances the ability of the agent to produce reactive oxygen species. The agent of the invention is also effective against microorganisms and can therefore be used to combat sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia or HIV. Also provided for by the present invention is a method of contraception utilising said spermicidal agent. |
