titleOfInvention Semiconductor optical component and wavelength amplifier/converter comprising this component
abstract In the semiconductor chip of an amplifier or converter according to this invention an active structure (10) has several active layers such as (11 and 12) which are superimposed on each other and which have a difference in composition from layer to layer the other. This difference in composition leads to a spectral shift between respective gain bands of these layers and expands the gain band of the amplifier or the optical bandwidth of the converter. This invention finds particular application in fiber optic telecommunications networks.
