The invention provides the use of oxidized cellulose, preferably oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC), and complexes thereof with structural proteins such as collagen, for the preparation of wound dressings for the treatment of chronic wounds. Preferably, the dressing is a knitted, woven or nonwoven fabric of ORC suitable for application directly to the surface of a wound as a wound dressing, or a semi-solid ointment for topical application containing dispersed ORC fibers or powder, or a collagen/ORC sponge. Preferably, the chronic wound is a venous ulcer, a decubitis ulcer or a diabetic ulcer. |
