titleOfInvention Esculetin derivatives
abstract Compounds of general formula (I), wherein each of R1 and R2 independently represents a hydrogen or a halogen atom or another group which does not interfere with subsequent iron chelation; each of R3 and R4 independently represents a hydrogen atom or a(C1-C8)alkyl or (C6 or C10)aryl(C1-C8)alkyl or an optionally modified carboxyl-bearing group of the general formula -CH2(CH2)n COX, where n is a number from 0 to 3 and X represents a hydroxyl group or another hydrophilic group, and R3 alternatively represents an acyl group of the general formula -COR, in which R represent a(C1-C8)alkyl, (C6 or C10)aryl(C1--C8)alkyl or (C5-C8)cycloalkyl group, provided that R3 and R4 between them contain at least three carbon atoms; or R3 and R4 together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a(C5-C8)cycloalkene ring; and one of Y and Z represents an enzymatically cleavable group and the other of Y and Z represents a hydrogen atom; and their salts or hydrates thereof, have been synthesised. The compounds have application in the detection of microorganisms in samples where the compound of general formula (I) is enzymatically cleaved to release a coloured of fluorogenic marker.
