abstract | An arrangement for transferring electric power from one polyphase circuit to another without introducing harmonic distortions comprises a torque motor (14) and a rotating electric machine (12) having two sets of windings (18, 26). Each of the windings is connected to a respective one of the polyphase electric circuits. The two windings have the same number of magnetic poles and generate coincident rotating magnetic fields having the same direction of rotation. When torque is applied (e.g. to the shaft of a rotor carrying one of the windings) in the same direction as that of the rotating magnetic fields, electric power is transferred from the rotor-connected circuit to the statorconnected circuit. The invention provides apparatus (10) and method for controlling the frequency at which power is supplied to a polyphase load, or to manage instabilities in weak links between generating stations. |
