abstract The invention concerns a method of identifying a randomly oriented crystal (12). The crystal is irradiated with an X-ray or neutron beam and a Laue spot diffraction pattern is obtained. A transform, typically a radial arctangenttransform, is then performed on the Laue spot diffraction pattern in order to produce a transformed image in which distortions in the Laue spot diffraction pattern are reduced. A determination is then made as to whether the transformed image is characteristic of a particular crystal.
