abstract A method of anion or cation analysis by ion chromatography (10) by chromatographic separation of ionic species in a sample solution in an eluent comprising an electrolyte using electrolytic chemical regeneration of the suppressor (11) by applying an electrical potential across the flow channels of a membrane suppressor (11), and detection (12) of the ionic species, the improvement comprising applying said electrical potential for a sufficient time to regenerate said suppressor (11), but discontinuing application of the electrical potential during separation and detection of the anions or cations, thereby reducing background noise concomitant to said electrical potential.< /SDOAB>
